[pct-l] Which water bottles do I use?

I am a current hiker and am now in the Sierras.  During the dessert I used Smart Water water bottles.  I carried two, 1 ltr bottles and one 1.5 ltr bottle.  That was pretty much my staple during the dessert.  I also carried a 2 ltr platypus just for the extra long dry sections like fuller ridge.  I sent it home from Kennedy Meadows and have only been carrying the two 1 ltr smart bottles.

Nalgenes are too heavy and these bottles hold up very well.

I second that emotion. On my 1980 thru-hike, the stretch from Timberline Lodge to the bridge was one of the hike's highlights. I won't spoil the surprise, but there are 2 awesome falls along that section. (Ironically, the bridge also marked a significant detour start due to the damage inflicted by the eruption of Mt. St. Helens earlier that year.)

A good source of information is found here: http://www.portofcascadelocks.org/bridge.htm

The web page also makes references to the PCT.

. . .
Kim, I would suggest doing the 50 mile section from Cascade locks/Eagle creek up to Timberline Lodge. It is far more scenic than the 50 miles just North of Cascade Locks. . . .

"How's Your Trail"?  I use a 3liter soda bottle, it weight is next to
nothing when empty, I have a strap on it so it stays close to my pack and
I'm deaf so I don't hear and sloshing, lol. Remember "Be Prepared"  Ground
Pounder Bill "Semper Fi"

I like the way air can be
burped out to eliminate that obnoxious sloshing noise.

Ralph carried extra water in 2-Liter soda bottles; they are lightweight and
essentially free. Buy soda when on sale, drink it, and reuse the containers on
your hike. Another possibility--depending on where you live, the time you have
available, and accessibility--is to make your own water caches (bury containers
of water where you are going to go later).

Hello, all-

Doing CA section P in about a week and a half. Was wondering if there are
any shuttle service available in that neck of the woods. I'm going from
Etna to I-5, so I was looking for the kind of service where they'll pick up
your car where you left it at the trailhead and keep it until the day you
need it. Don't really want my car sitting at a freeway offramp for 5 days.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Hello Judson,
?
You might consider hiking NOBO from Castle Crags State Park.? You could leave your car there. Call and talk to the head Ranger to arrange permission.
.
Then when you reach Etna Summit hitch down to Etna (it might take an hour to get a ride there). Hitching out of Etna I got a ride within one minute to I5 and caught a Greyhound to Shasta City. The Greyhound will not stop to?let you off at Castle Crags.?( You will have to walk nearly a mile to the on-ramp of?I5)?Then I hitched south to Castle Crags. It took about 15 minutes to get that ride. When hitching always have pre-made a sign saying where you want to go.

Just an fyi. On a day hike on the PCT today, going past Shaver Lake, north of Carson Pass heading for Echo Summit, Malarky was seen speeding past with J.R. "trying to catch up to him". Both looked well and speedy! We managed to catch J.R. and give him a fresh apple. :)

Yes, Jerry, you are right!? It iseven more than just?"a little tough" with a horse. Riding the PCT solo is, indeed,?a lot more challenging than hiking it. But, I came to accept that and became an expert at hitching. I did what I had to do - and it worked.
?
So, to do Section P, here is how I did it:? It takes a lot of research and pre-planning.? I had driven my rig ahead to park it, with prior permission, at Castle Crags State Park. Note that horses are not allowed in the park.? In Castella, I had knocked on the door of a house in Castella, that I could see, had horses. I got permission to leave Primo there (when, later, I?rode into Castella)?in a large, and safe, corral. Then I returned, with the help of BCH Sam Burrows, to Bernie Falls State Park?with my horse (I had left Primo at a BCH camp near there)? Then I saddled up and rode Section O?to Castella, left Primo, and moved the rig north,?caching at one location,?to a ranch (pre-arranged)?in Etna. From there I hitched back to Castle Crags and rode north from there to Etna Summit (in 2008, the trail was closed because if fire north of there). There is no cell service at the Etna Summit, so I sent word down with a?hiker who was hitching? A
BCH, who owns the ranch in Etna,?picked Primo and I up there with my rig. I then trailered around the fire to a ranch (pre-arranged) in Seiad Valley. Left Primo there and drove rig north, caching at four locations . . ;. . . .
?
If you would be interested in more explanation of my hitching -?taking a bus?- hitching approach, you can find my slide show on the Postholer Stockman Forum.? TYPE in the following - don't click on it:?? postholer.com/stockman
?
JUDSON.? I suggest that you research the Greyhound schedule. There are six buses that go south on I5. Confirm when and where you will be able to catch a bus. Unfortunately, Greyhound will not stop at either Dunsmuir or Castella. I had to hitch from Shasta City in 2008.
?
Have a great hike,
?

Thanks everybody for your replies :)

Yes by reading your answers I realize 6 liters are already considered as 'plenty' :)

In April this year I day hiked in Bryce and Zion, during the few days when it was quite hot (90s). In these conditions and in a bit more than half a day I realized I could quickly drink 3 liters. So 6 liters for let's say a couple of days, indeed I will need to use some time before PCT to acclimatize. I have planned to spend parts of March and April 2013 in Utah exactly for that (and gear testing). This year I needed about 3 weeks to get used to the super dry air when I was traveling around on the Colorado Plateau.

I have lived many years in Norway, and I am from Switzerland, so hot deserts and lack of water are a challenge for me... And in addition, in Norway you don't need to filter the water while hiking in the mountains... :-P

The platypus sound just great, I will go for it. A couple of them. And the idea of recycling 1-2 Gatorade bottles sounds just fine. What I don't 100% like with the platys is that since there are in the backpack, you cannot see how much you've been drinking... so I will have to gear test this too :)

Cheerios to everybody from France :)
Anne

Good morning, Judson,

In 2010 I parked my car at Etna to hike north.  I asked ? and received
permission ? to leave the car in the non-enclosed Etna municipal parking
lot with the off-duty police cars.  It?s on the main-drag next to the
parking lot for the famous drug store ? ice cream, yum.  It may also be
possible to leave a car at the hostel in Etna.

The Siskiyou Transit And General Express (STAGE)
http://www.co.siskiyou.ca.us/GS/StageSchedule.aspx serves Etna, and their
schedules show it also has an I-5 south route to Dunsmuir via Yreka.
http://www.co.siskiyou.ca.us/GS/docs/Stage_Schedules/SouthboundI5_%205-30-12.pdf

If all that is still in place, all that would remain for you is to find
your way from Dunsmuir to the trailhead at Castle Crags, which is a short
hike or a bush-league hitch.

I?ve used the STAGE several times and they are a good, reliable, and
economical carrier.
