Because the permits are on a reservation and also a walk-in quota system it
is entirely possible to either get a permit by reservation or by going to
the ranger station. I went to the ranger station in Yosemite really EARLY
and just kind of "camped out" there until the rangers opened up. Several
others (about 8) joined me and we all got permits.

Absolutely great time to do the JMT, but Diane's comments about permits is
correct. I've always gotten in anyway by using some of the other nearby
trailheads. Just check with the rangers at whichever end you're starting
and they can tell you which will have openings. Once you're in, you're in,
and all entries into the High Sierra are worth hiking in their own right.
It's all incredible.
