If you're going to hike out to Independence, it's actually much better to 
hitch into Lone Pine.  There, you have full resupply, the Dow Villa (a great 
place complete with pool and spa), and the Film Museum.

The good news is that hitch-hiking out of there is pretty easy and a few
hours away from the trail in Independence is probably a good thing.
