[pct-l] Sleeping bag selection. Ahhh!

Ben,
I'll keep to what I have experience on the PCT with... Western Mountaineering's Ultralight is an excellent PCT bag.  I also used a W.M. Mega Lite on a second season and it was not enough bag for me.  If you've got a little extra weight on your frame or are claustraphobic, try the W.M. Alpinlite.  A W.M. Versalite is too much bag for the typical thru-hiking season for most people.

Reguardless try on the bag in a retail store before buying it.  It is important that you be comfortable in it.  The Ultralight is a narrow bag.  Lighter if it's comfortable, but not everyone would be.  Also I would not buy a bag that doesn't have a zipper all the way to the foot area.  There are nights you will want to unzip and wouldn't be comfortable without anything on your feet.  Used to be Marmot's ultralight bags only zipped (or unzipped) to your hip.  Not sure if that's still the case or not.

Good luck...
Charles

Hello Everyone,

I am planning a PCT thru hike for 2013 and I am trying to get a jump on
preparations.  I am drowning in choices for sleeping bags and can see
benefits to carrying a 15 deg bag as well as a 0 deg bag.  Is a 15 deg bag
going to keep me warm in the Sierras?  The popular choice seems to be the
Marmot Helium and the Helium membrane.  I am also looking at the Western
mountaineering Apache and the Versalite, as well as the Montbell U.L. Super
Spiral Down Hugger #1.  Does anyone have any experience with any of these
bags or recommendations on temp ratings.  Also, Sleeping bag liner,
superfluous?  Can't decide.  Thank you all in advance to everyone!!  What
an amazing resource!

-Ben
