I've stayed at both the Dow Villa and Whitney Portal Hostel, and recommend
them both highly.  The only reason I came back later and stayed with Doug
at the hostel he and his sons built was that he was so hiker supportive
when Calorie had his fall and airlift on Kearsarge.  Doug put Calorie, and
his brother Double Check, up for several weeks and charged them nothing
except asking Double Check to lend a hand at the Whitney Portal Store.
That kind of person will get my business whenever I end up in Lone Pine,
which has been twice now since my hike.  But that being said, the Dow is
wonderful too, and if you want your own room for not much more than the
hostel, check them out, they're very hiker friendly too.
