[pct-l] Site of deadly bear mauling remains closed - SFGate

Safety reasons.  The hiker did make a mistake by lingering in the area of the bear and photographing, but the bear charged in a predatory manner with no known other defensive reasons (ie.  female protecting cubs or a bear protecting a moose kill).  Due to the predatory nature of the attack the Alaska State Troopers and the Denali National Park Service decided to monitor the area and keep visitors out for awhile.  There was just another attack up here in just the last two days.  A young female geologist was attacked and dragged for 20 feet by a female grizzley.  The young woman screamed and the bear ran off.  The sow was protecting 2 cubs so there was a reason for this one.  Last night they interviewed the young woman from her hospital bed on local news.  She was in good spirits, but shaken.  mountain mike

Mountain Mike,

I have a question.  Do you know the reason the Park Service (or any other agency) would close the area when the threat is over (the offending bear was derminated).  Do you think the only reason is legal?

Thanks

Shon

They have been reporting on this tragic incident for the last
several days up here.  Surprisingly it's the first death in Denali Parks history, for over 90 years, by a grizzly which speaks well of the National Park's service's bear education program.  The guy made a fatal mistake by lingering too long in the presence of the bear, but his father reports a guy who sounds very much like many of us who communicate on this site.  A man who loves the wilderness, the remote places and the life affirming adventure it brings.  There was a gruesome description by a local writer with knowledge of the Timothy Treadwell mauling which occurred a few years back on what it would be like to be killed by a brown bear.  In one word, just complete horror.  They don't kill you right away.  The bowl you over and pin you like a wrestler would, then begin crushing bone and ripping flesh.  All my sympathies go to the hiker and his family.  He leaves a wife and small
child back in San Diego.

Stood around taking pics for 8 minutes within 50 yards.    I feel very bad for his family who have to deal with the mess and
even worse for the poor bear who was murdered because he was to stupid to listen to his training.
