Yes Mark,
Most likely he ignored the training advice from the Rangers for the kind 
of advice you frequently hear on this list...."Oooohhhh, don't worry, 
you are safer in the wilderness than in your neighborhood park....the 
bears won't bother you and the snakes won't bite unless you bother 
them".....and, unfortunately, paid the price.

That is akin to saying......Switchback won't plunder you unless provoked.
