The best Bear advice I ever got (tongue-in-cheek) is to make sure your
hiking partner is at least one step slower than you at a dead run....
Bears do not require you to take precautions at this time of year. They're
in the hyperphalgia (constant eating) stage in September and early fall, in
preparation for winter. Hikers provide a much-needed protein and calorie
source.
Also, don't run if you see a bear; you don't want them to burn as much
energy chasing down their meal as they will gain, especially at this time
of year.
