>>"I was very bothered by the volume of people this year.  The impact of about
a thousand people is significant."<<

-I agree, my heart worries over the health of the PCT, how crowds of hikers may trample places, and the wilderness experience that is lost for those who want to backpack, to feel like one is "out there" without civilization, electronics, crowds ect.

>>"My observation:  This increase is occuring because the trail is becoming
easier to hike."<<
-There are now several books about hiking the PCT, and Cheryl Strayed's book is becoming so famous, I'm so worried everyone is going to want to do the trail,  esp. when the movie comes out.  The trail as I knew it won't exist, I fear.

<<"I don't have an answer to all this">>

-Should we consider support for limiting the number of permits for indended thru hikes.  Like 300-350 for NOBO's, 200-300 for SOBO, and unlimited for section hikes.  Just throw'n out some numbers.

also, I agree with Ken, there are lots of other long hikes

CDT
Pacific Northwest Trail
Grand Enchantment Trail
Hayduke Trail
Idaho Centennial trail
Mountains to Sea trail
Australia's   Bibbulmun track
New Zealand's   Te Araroa trail
Europe has a dozen long trails in the "E" series (E2 for example)
UK's Land's End to John 'O Groats
