Can he not stay at the State Park in Idyllwild? If not, there's nice
campground on the road that leads to Spitler Trailhead.
Take the 74 or the 243 to Mountain Center, then travel East on the 74
for about 3 miles. You will see the turn for Apple Canyon Road and
Hurkey Creek Park. The campground is either Hurkey Creek Park or it's
just a little beyond it with a different name. Either way, it's easy
to see, flat and full of nice pine trees. I've never stayed there
myself. Just driven by on my way to hike the Spitler Trail up to the
PCT.
