I used to put on my 1980's external frame like that, too. I never liked the way the base of the pack would slam against my lower back, though--okay, maybe it was my middle back, but I still didn't like it. Yes, I sometimes lost something, especially when I started carrying a Platypus right under the upper flap--it would slide out every other, er, mount-up. I don't put my much-lighter internal frame set-up like that either. I think it's because I've dropped a lot of weight off my load and I don't feel like I have to use that method, which seemed to work really well with heavy loads that were hard to manipulate otherwise.
