[pct-l] camera for thru-hiking

Hey DMoney,
I carried a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX10 this past hike (2,300 mi) and was very happy with it. Small, lightweight, waterproof, shockproof, etc.. Seems to have taken some great pictures too. Even took panoramic pics on the fly too - by panning the camera while taking the pic, very cool. 16.2 megapixels, HD movies, and 4x optical zoom. No geotagging tho.
Specialized battery unfortunately, but hardly used the backup I ended up carrying, given recharging while resupplying... did a couple times later in the trip tho. I carried a solar panel for a good part of the trip (for the camera, phone, headlamp, and eventually music) but ended up dropping it once I realized I could get away with just recharging in town. Really only needed it for the Sierra where you're out for longer stretches and are taking pictures non-stop.
I more than feel the ruggedized camera was worth it - carried it the entire way in my pocket, ready to pull out at a moment's notice and with one hand, because I wasn't worried about getting it wet or a little dirty. Certainly tried not to drop it to test its shock-proofness but nice to feel that it should take a fall should it happen.
Hope this helps - good luck!
Fool

Subject: [pct-l] camera for thru-hiking
I'm curious to hear what kinds of cameras thru-hikers have been carrying
and how they performed. Has anyone tried the geotagging cameras such as
the Panasonic ZS10 and is this actually useful or is it a gimmick? What
are your opinions on AA battery power (e.g. Cannon SX130/a1200) vs. the
specialized batteries? For those using AA batteries and a GPS, is it
better to carry a solar charger or a bag of spares? Will a standard
camera survive the trip when treated with ordinary care, or do you find
the waterproof/ruggedized cameras worth the trade-offs?
Thanks!
DMoney
