What a refreshing topic! A brother joined me from Toulumne Meadows to Sth Lake Tahoe and brought a simple rod and reel. We found partially frozen lakes to be gold mines for fish; they're just sitting there waiting for something to hit the water! These days, your rig can be much lighter than what we used and you can even fashion a clever set-up to convert a trekking pole to a fishing pole (shameless self promotion follows) (see Backpacker magazine's review of my conversion for the kickoff several years ago). If you're a fly fisherman you might find the time tough to allocate from your hiking schedule. But if only hike 6 days a week and hit a lake frequently on your zero day, then your in for a tasty trout treat. And, with budget cuts, your unlikely to have any rangers in the out back checking for licenses and out of season fishing. There has to be a good side to budget cuts . . .
