Hi PCT MOM,

I recall stopping to visit you during my 2009 ride.  I did ride on to Monument 78.

Yow asked what part of the PCT I want to hike next summer. I plan to hike north from Horseshoe Meadows to Yosemite Valley.  This summer I rode SOBO from Sierra City to Touloume Meadows. I encountered lots of obstacles for a rider - down trees, and snow. Had to use my saw to clear my way around many trees and ride around snow slopes that would be risky for a horse. I also had to detour around snow. By the time I reached the border of the Yosemite Wilderness I was delighted to discover that crews had cleared the trail just days before. My favorite place in Yosemite was beautiful Benson Lake, where I caught trout for dinner.

In June of 2008, when I reached Horseshoe Meadows, I trailered Primo around the Sierra to Sierra City. This, I had pre-planned to do to avoid the snow on the high passes. Then I left Primo in good care while I drove the rig north, caching my resupplies as I went, at several locations. I parked the rig at Castle Crags State Park and hitched north to Shasta City. Then I took a Greyhound to Yuba City and hitched from there back to Sierra City and my horse. Then, surprise and disappointment, lightning-started fires had happened. The trail north of Sierra City was closed. The hikers were hitching around. I had to hitch, Greyhound, and hitch back to Castle Cregs to get my rig. I then drove back down to Sierra City to get Primo. I then trailered him north and recovered all of my caches and restarted my ride at Burney Falls State Park. I rode north to Sisters, Oregon.  In 2009 I restarted at Sierra City to do what I had missed in 2008 - and then trailered
north to Sisters, and finally completed my ride at the Canadian Border.  If my approach seems complicated it is because it was. It has been estimated that it is four to five times more difficult to ride the PCT than it is to hike it. I agree.
