I second the motion of attending kickoff just to see the gear, meet
the people, hike a little in the area and enjoy all the
presentations. It's a great time.

I hiked my 2nd half of the trail with a Gossamer Gear G4. It was only
$80 when I bought it. It wasn't the best-fitting pack for me but it
did the job perfectly. After a while, the gear matters very little. I
was no longer interested in gear in the least. I couldn't care less
if there was better gear or lighter gear. Gear was just gear. The
only important things anymore were miles and food and the trail and
the beauty.

My favorite pack now is my ULA Relay that I got for only $40 at
kickoff in the bargain box.
