The summit of Mount Shasta is at 14,171 feet
He was starting from 7800 feet at 3 pm
Wearing only a t-shirt, sweat pants, and no shoes....in November
He would have to climb 6400 feet to reach the summit, and then descend the same.

Clearly, this young man was not thinking clearly. One can only wonder why.
