The Mountaineers Books has just released the two-volume *Pacific Crest
Trailside Reader*, an anthology of nearly 100 stories that follow the PCT
from Campo to Manning Park. About half of the stories have been written by
hiker/writers about their experiences on the trail (from Ray Echols to
Duffy and Angela Ballard to Barbara Egbert), a quarter of the stories have
more of a historical flavor (Norman Clyde, Orland 'Bart' Bartholomew,
William O. Douglas) and a quarter are classic environmental literature
(Wallace Stegner, John Muir, Barry Lopez). Jeff Schaffer, William
Sullivan, Walkin' Jim Stoltz, and many others have stories in the
collection.

The editors are not making one thin dime on this project. All of their
royalties are being returned to the Pacific Crest Trail Association for the
support and preservation of the trail. $4,000 has already been
contributed. Books can be purchased through Amazon (if you must), the
Pacific Crest Trail Association (
http://shop.pcta.org/books/the-pacific-crest-trailside-reader-california/or
http://shop.pcta.org/books/the-pacific-crest-trailside-reader-oregon-and-washington/.
. . this way the PCTA gets their cut AND the author royalties), and
increasing numbers of local book stores (be sure and ask for it if they
don't have it in stock).

During the next ten days there are some special events that you are invited
