Use at least 20" or 21" squares.  When you get your material, find someone with a surge attachment on his/her sewing machine to do the edges so they won't unravel.  Clerks at the local fabric shop or sewing machine sales store should know someone who can do that operation fairly cheaply.  They might even do some sewing themselves.
