Brandon,
I have found that the best way to protect your food from rodents (and bears) is 
to store it in odor-proof sacks. They are called OpSaks and are available at REI 
and on line. I used them for five and one-half months and over 2000 PCT miles 
and never had them violated.

I saw no illegals while I was out there and no one in my group did either. 
Doesn't mean their not out there, but I agree with Tuna on the rodents. My 
biggest problems were the cute little field mice. Their so damn brave and will 
walk right up to you at night. Their all over the place and it's best to 
protect your food from those little thieves....they aren't being hunted by the 
border patrol so they don't mind the extra attention.
