Just to repeat what Ned said - tying yourself to a rope while crossing a
creek is exactly the wrong thing to do.  If you slip, the force of the water
will push you straight to the bottom and pin you there.  That's just one of
those ideas that seems to make intuitive good sense but in practice doesn't
work at all the way you intend.  If you slip, you're much better off
floating downstream and trying to swim for shore.
