[pct-l] ice axe

I agree - there is a lot of snow up there still. I am looking at Mt Baldy
from about 40 miles away and the snow covers at least the top 1500ft on the
south side. And if I can see it on the south slopes, there is bound to be
lots more on the north faces. There is even some snow visible on Mt Wilson
which is 4000 ft lower than Baldy. We have had a few storms in the last
couple of weeks to refresh the snow level. But it's still early to tell what
it will be like in a few weeks. The weather forecast for Southern Cal is for
warm and sunny conditions all this week, so that should melt a lot of it.

Just as a data point, I hiked Mt Baden Powell in mid April, 2009 as a snow
practice and I hit snow less than a quarter mile from the parking lot. I
never saw the trail after that and it was snow travel all the way to the
summit with depths of over four feet in places. On my thru hike, I reached
Baden Powell a month later and the only snow I encountered was a small patch
near the summit, just before the Wally Waldron tree. So in four weeks, all
that snow melted.

I am watching san jacinto from rancho mirage and the snow has greatly
dissipated in the last 3 days. But trust me there is enough snow left to
make it interesting.

might be smart depending on snow levels and how clear the weaver is...you'd
only want it ... At very worst; from paradise cafe to fuller... But cabazon
is the nearest place to ditch it ( 4.5 miles off trail)
