That effort is admirable, but I'm not sure that it helps.  Depending on the
device, its antenna and settings, the track that is recorded may make the
average worse.  At this point, I don't believe that consumer level devices
are going to yield better results worth using.  As I was told by a hiker
that planned on making a data book for another trail, there are professional
devices that can record the date to generate a much more accurate track.
 Unfortunately that highly accurate track is not generated until the raw
data is analyzed by a computer.  That person had two of those devices, as
well as a pedometer.  I can't see a thru hiker carrying even a single part
of that hardware.  Now if you have a few thousand dollars to carry around a
device like this that can generate a track with accuracy from 1-30
centimeters, then I believe many would find your gps track highly desirable.
