Statistically odds of loosing your luggage are far less than you pack getting lost in the mail.

And you chrckyou baggage so don't worry about not being able to bring things.  Even handguns are allowed in CHECKED baggage.  As for alcohol or canisters, they are prohibited, but you can buy those in San Diego just fine.

For rides,  have you asked with scout and frodo?
