Ned, please clarify what additional "leg protection" measures you have in 
mind to supplement that afforded by "gaitors" (presumably 'mountaineering' 
not 'desert' style, e.g. Dirty Girls).

Re: Pack-weight.  An observation for heavy trucking Senior Hikers In 
Training:  As a 60 yr. old long distance runner (>5 km),  I incur more 
injuries carrying no weight whatsoever than I do hiking under any load.  Of 
course lighter is better, but...
