I finished in the deserts late in the year, because I had to leave them mid
way in spring for a wedding. I came back to trail with the same folks I'd
been hiking with and did the High Sierra and everything north, crossing into
Canada with many of them, and then returned to the deserts to complete the
thru hike. I wouldn't have missed hiking all those miles with so many
wonderful people. I like most hikers, and the several groups of people I
hiked with were as rich an experience as the trail itself. Jump in at Big
Bear, as Paul suggests, or where ever the pack is, and pick up the
experience of the other thrus. Then, finish alone as a very meditative SOBO
experience late in the year. It worked for me. I liked both ways, but
really treasure the fun of hiking with the others.
