I think a lot of trail angels are happy - actually VERY happy - when you pay
their generosity *forward*. Instead of paying the TA's back for their time,
energy, food, and yes money, simply recognize it and then pay it forward
with interest to somebody else. For example, if you've enjoyed the trail,
then maybe you volunteer on a trail maintenance project. Maybe you find
something at http://www.volunteermatch.org/ that impacts the life of
somebody else. Maybe you become a big brother / sister and you take a kid
for a hike and introduce them, if even just a little bit, to nature.
Whatever you do though, share it with your TA. Let them know,
specifically, what you have done or what you are planning. I thing any real
trail angel will be very moved by your thoughtfulness.
