Not sure if they are still in print but you can also invest in the Backcountry Adventures books for southern and northern California if she is going to want to drive the Forest Service roads. I think they retail for about $40 each but have extensive coverage of every little dirt road and even include 4X4 trails.

I still have a northern California edition. If they are out of print, let me know and I'll sell you mine.

Ah, yes, a big revelation I had with the 3 nuvi Garmin GPS's I've had (long
story) is that you *can* program them to go directly to lat/lon GPS
coordinates and they'll figure out the closest road access to that point.
You have to be a wee bit careful (e.g., look at its "map" view before you
commit), but it'll very often get you directly to the specified point.
So, in other words, you can enter the trail head and road crossing points in
directly -- no need to go to a town and navigate out (which you may want to
do, but you don't have to).
