I absolutely, full-heartedly recommend just a tarp (ir: "rainproof thing").
After carrying my tarp I'll never bring a tent on a hiking trip ever again.
(maybe a weekend long camping trip... *maybe*.... but never a hiking trip).
That being said, it's certainly not for everyone (see polls:
http://planyourhike.com/polls/ ), so you'll want to try it out on a rainy
trip or two before you commit.
