When we did the desolation wilderness part of section J last week my friends used and appreciated the MSR ascent snowshoes. I went without the extra weight but I'm pretty good at quasi-drunk stumbling over suncups...and don't mind it as much as some. I prefer to have crampons with me.

If you do get snowshoes know the type matters, one of our group had to carry more frequently because a lack of metal spikes under her snowshoes made descents and traverses hard. (not the MSR ones). The MSRs did good snowshoe skiing down steeps and traversing and were easier to put on...

I am the command center for a thru hiker who is going to get to Kennedy's Meadow in a week and want to make sure he has the best gear. Appreciate any thoughts.
