I concur with all the above, and as a retired guy myself, will stress the
hike, hike, and hike some more.  The biggest cause of attrition early on in
the hike is bodies not being ready for the trip.  Some can get fit on trail,
but lots of folks quit in the first 200 to 500 miles due to finding it much
harder than they had expected.  If you're already OK with the physical
aspect of the trip, your chances of completion go way up, as does your fun
level.
