Good morning, ErinAnne,

Regardless of your reported success in finding a hiking partner there is a
very high probability that the mutual commitment to a ’15 thru-hike will
crater for one reason or another -- most likely even before departure.

Start with a companion if you wish or must, but understand that you will
probably either part ways sometime during the hike, or you will feel
pressure to hike that person’s hike and even quit if/when the other person
does. If you truly wish to attempt such a long hike you would be well
advised to become totally self-reliant with your gear and your hiking.

Companionship on the PCT is much less of a problem than most inexperienced
hikers believe. There is rarely – or never – a real need to hike, camp, and
hitch alone. Particularly in the southernmost sections before the hikers
become spread out along the trail, one is almost always in loose – but
constant – association with kindred spirits. As the days unfold you will
meet and, if you wish, fall in apace with congenial companions; sometimes
staying in close contact, and other times regularly or occasionally crossing
paths. Much of the charm of the PCT social experience found when one
doesn’t have to do everything in lock-step with another semi-arbitrarily
selected partner(s).

By selecting a partner prior to the hike – particularly this early – you
will have to compromise-away much of your personal satisfaction and
preference.
