[pct-l] Transportation from Reno airport to PCT at I80

There is a local trolley (bus) that goes from the Truckee Transit Center out to the West end of Donner Lake near Donner Pass Road. There may only be a couple of runs a day to the far western stop so you'll have to check the schedule. This would shorten the hitch and anyone going west on the road at that point would probably be going to the top past the PCT trail head.
