Hey Mango,
In a situation like that I'd just use my thumb. It helps if you print up several legible signs indicating towns along the way towards where you want to go. You are more likely to get a ride if those towns aren't too far away. Once you get a ride you can always ask how far they are going. And flash a smile! That works for me.
