As to bear cans in a light weight pack. I have used a Bear Vault 500 for hikes in the Sierras for the past three years.  I put it inside my Mariposa Plus with a camp pillow underneath, next the BV 500 standing up with a few articles of clothing wrapped around it.  I still have room for my quilt, Gatewood Cape, NeoAir matures, extra clothing, 1st aid kit and mucilaginous items on top.  The BV 500 rests comfortably against by back where there is some egg crate foam padding.  I have no complaints other than my own tendency to over pack with more food than I need.
