[pct-l] Stove fuel consumption

A couple of ideas on extending your canister fuel usage:
If you are going to heat water in the morning, pre-warm the canister by
putting it in your warm sleeping bag. A warm canister is much more
efficient.
After your water comes to a boil and you add it to your food. Turn off your
stove and wrap your pot of food is a jacket.

I also use a cannister stove. I found it quite worthwhile to take a new
cannister, and the pot I use to boil water for dinner, and test the
cannister's cooking capacity. I did this at home.
Every night I filled the pot with cold water, brought it to a boil on
the stove and shut it down. I weighed the cannister each night to track
how much fuel I used. I determined that a cannister would boil 15 pots
of water, so I knew how long it could possibly last under ideal
conditions. I have to take into account that outdoors is much colder
than my kitchen, so more fuel might be needed in cold, windy conditions.
But the calculation has worked out for me so far. I have never run
out of fuel. I can also use the weight record I kept to determine how
many meals I might get out of a partially used cannister, if I pack it
for a short trip.
Marion.
