Thank you for taking the time to thoroughly go into detail on this question.  This has been a wonderful discussion with many points of view and people's experience shared.  The whole issue of closing up a wound that can still get infected is an impotent one that needs to be considered before performing any procedure on ones self or others.   Things, instruments, fingers, etc., can only be so clean in the field.  As always prevention, i.e. paying attention to what you are doing, where you are steeping and what is hanging out over the trail is so important.  I hope that this topic will be easily found in the archives for others to review.
