You don't need the Whitney permit if you are climbing it from the PCT.  You
do need it if you climb Whitney from the PCT and then go out at Whitney
Portal as you won't be able to come back up from the Whitney Portal side
without it.  So if you plan on going out to Lone Pine via Whitney Portal,
then pay the extra and get the permit.  Most folks hike on and come out at
Kearsarge if they need a resupply after Whitney and Forester Pass.
