My wife and I were talking about that earlier this afternoon.  We figured there could be continuous video footage of the trail so that you could watch your progress in real-time.  Furthermore, that video footage could be surround like they do in iMAX.

I hadn't thought of that.

Of course not.  We could probably sort of replicate the exertion and the sights and sounds, but there's really no way to replicate the feelings, the smells and the element of the unexpected.  That last is one of the more important reasons to hike...on the PCT or otherwise.  In the far future, maybe it'll be all holographic, like on the Enterprise's HoloDeck.
