quick note about tortillas,
my dad worked for Gruma (Mission tortillas); and that brand, at least ... the
tortillas made in california had no preservatives, but those in the midwest and
east coast did. so where you get them might have a big impact on if they spoil
or not.

the ones sold in the L.A. area most definitely mold... their shelf life was only
4 days at that time. look for stores that keep them refrigerated; in the
midwest you commonly see "best buy" dates 21 days from shelving. if these are
unopened they are likely to not mold indefinitely.

btw, +1 for baybel cheeses... also i have used Mizthra cheese for about 5 days
with no spoilage etc, in hot weather.

HI lisa,
I have never had tortillas spoil. They do not require refrigeration. As for
cheeses - I bought BabyBel cheeses in all three flavors, along with all of the
rest of my trail food, prior to starting my PCT rides in both 2008 and 2009.
That cheese is sealed in wax. I did not have any spoil - EXCEPT if they were
crushed in my pack. Then I would get some mold along the lines of the cracks. I

would just trim the mold off. The rest of the cheese was still good. Those
cheeses are really delicious. I ate an average of four each day - and I lived on

the trail for over five months. Good with lunch and with dinners.

I am curious how people who send themselves resupply boxes include things like
bread, tortillas or cheeses. Don't these go bad during the several weeks in
advance the box needs to be sent? Seems like breads/tortillas in my home only
last a few days, perhaps that is due to the more natural brands I tend to buy?
If these are items that you have mailed in your resupply boxes are there any
certain brands that last longer or tips that you could share?

Or are these items bought on trail to supplement your box items, and if so do
almost all stops have access to these basics (Warner Springs, Hikertown, KM?)

Thanks for sharing your experiences!
 Lisa
