[pct-l] Apps

Just for the record, I went to the posted link and the track and waypoints are from HalfMile and the actual map tiles are an additional download compiled by Jim Bravo. So you need both files on your phone to get the complete package of maps, waypoints and tracks. Once you load the maps you can always add (download) addition map sections if needed for resupply or added side trips.

I have an Android phone the Incredible made by HTC and I have been using Backcountry Navigator Pro for about a year now and it works very well. The app lets you download topo maps to your phone for free so you can access them even when you have no cell service. You can also go to this link and download HalfMiles PCT maps formatted for the app the instructions are on the webpage. Once you download the file to your phones SD card (in the correct dir), open Backcountry Navigator Pro and open the maps for PCT and you should have all the maps as well as all the waypoints. The file is a bit large so you should have a external memory card. http://www.backcountrynavigator.com/content/android-gps-pacific-crest-trail I tried it and it worked as prescribed. The app cost a few dollars but I think it was worth it and I don't think it is available for the Iphone.

Jim,

I've just rejoined Pct-L after being off the list for 2 ½ years. Having
just yesterday bought a Droid Razr, and as a newbie smart phone owner
(overwhelming), I'm interested in Apps generally, but particularly ones
that assist in the outdoors or along the trail. I'll check the archives for
past discussions, so needless repetition doesn't have to occur here. But
if anyone really likes an App, or two or ten, and would be willing to take a
minute to share acquired wisdom off-list, I would be very grateful.

Walk well, Dr Bob
