Under Armour makes both compression and non-compression shorts. The ones I linked to are the non-compression model. I find them to be just snug enough to keep everything in it's place without constricting.

I find that compression shorts can be somewhat warm and constraining on the trail.  I've found that the ex-officio boxer briefs are much more comfortable but still serve the purpose of helping with chafing: <http://www.exofficio.com/products/details/mens-give-n-go-boxer-brief>

I'm also a huge fan of Body Glide.  Works great on your feet also to avoid or treat blisters.
