I would just like to add one more major problem faced by a thru-hiker this
year.

A young man who hiked the AT and SoCal without sunglasses decided not to
wear sunglasses in the Sierras. By the time he got to Crabtree...and
probably before...he new he was slowly going blind. So bad, that he was
ready to hike over Whitney portal just for sunglasses. At least once he
woke up in the morning and needed to pry open his eyes using his fingers. I
read one of his paper journal entries and it talked about how he was going
blind and it looked like chicken scratch. Only after using a bandana for a
few days did he finally get a pair of sunglasses from another hiker.

Again...this was not an accident, but rather a conscious decision not to
wear sunglasses.
