[pct-l] Echo Lake south to Tuolumne Meadows-need 1 or 2 partners

William Moore bmoorevid at yahoo.com
Wed Aug 10 22:00:42 CDT 2011

I am planning a southbound hike for sometime in September from Echo Lake to T. Meadows (approx 160 miles).  My regular partner may not be able to make it and my wife would rather I not hike alone so I am looking for 1 or 2 hiking partners to share travel expenses and trail stories.  Last year I, and my hiking partner, did the JMT in 14 days and  I would like to do the Echo Lake-T. Meadows hike in 7-10 days.
I do ultralite, hike from first light till almost dusk and do not carry a stove but would be flexable to your hiking style.  I am 65 but still in good shape (3 half marathons this year).  Anyone interested?

I was in yosemite between olmstead point, the valley, up yosemite creek
to ten lakes pass and there were NO or very few mosquitos anywhere, even
when we were near snow, in snowmelt, meadows, etc...

I just did a week long trip through Northern Yosemite along the PCT to Tuolumne Meadows. The mosquitoes in some areas were epic.  Even 100% Deet did not do much to deter them. But, they were very small ones and the bites did not seem to have much effect.  Some areas were worse than others.  They were worse in the wet areas or more forested areas.  Open breezy areas were a bit better.  Things are slowly drying out so the bugs should improve.  We had head net with us which were really nice to have.

Snow in the California Cascades is still plentiful. The following photos of

Tried to do Lassen peak but the trail was closed a mile and a half from the

Hi Rick,

I have not hiked it, but I plan to do some hiking on parts of that section
about one week after you start.  I have been closely monitoring trip reports
nearby from the Washington Trails Association website.

It appears that there is still a fair amount of snow on shaded north and
east slopes above 5500 feet or so, and in some cases lower.

Further to the west of the crest, it has been announced that the road to
Artist Point by Mt Baker will not open this year because of the deep snow.
While Mt. Baker is famous for getting huge snow totals, in the last 30 years
I don't ever recall that road not opening during summer.

In addition to the above average snow pack, we having an unusually cool
summer and the melt seems to be proceeding more slowly than usual.

Good afternoon!

My brother and I just finished Section R on Sunday, 8-7-11.  All guidebook
and Halfmile water sources are flowing.  Lookout Spring about 6 miles north
from Seiad Valley is very slow, about a liter every 3-5 minutes, and you
will need water there.  Sheep Camp spring is gushing out of the pipe, now my
favorite water source.  Others said that this water does not need treatment,
but I cannot say.  I did not treat it.  As you get into the 5 miles before
Mt. Ashland Inn, water is every quarter mile or so - it seemed to be
everywhere.
There is a nice picnic table and water spigot literally a few steps south of
Mt. Ashland Inn specifically for PCT hikers.

One piece of snow near Siskyou Gap was problematic.  The trail just stops
into a very straight, uphill snow structure with a steep dropoff on the
left.  The snow fools you into thinking that it sits right on the trail as
you go up - it doesn't!.  We followed fresh footsteps up the snow, but those
steps diverted right onto the hillside due to tricky and perhaps perilous
walking conditions on the snow.  We then discovered that the trial actually
turns downhill to the left of the snow structure, and we had to bushwhack
downhill to it on a very steep, loose material-laden hillside.  Others might
try going left of the snow just as the trail meets it.  Keep looking at your
maps and GPS.

Good afternoon again!

Having just gotten off Section R as a section hike, I would like to give
just a highlight and a lowlight.  The highlight, aside from the pleasure of
hiking with my brother, was the stunning abundance of wildflowers, with the
loudest sound typically the thousands of bumblebees working.

The lowlight was what I will call the Most Inequitable Moment on Section R.
It was running across a huge fresh piece of watermelon hanging right across
the trail - with a sign that said "For Sourdough."  Criminally unfair.

Several friends who just hiked from TM to Sonora Pass told me this morning
that they are worse than usual.  The description as "epic" above probably
covers it.  I was in TM and the Valley last week and noticed fewer than
usual.  So it matters how close to the standing water and recent snow melt
you are.

Hi fellow hikers,

Mountain Ned asked me to post about my experience hiking through the
Sierras, to help the hikers who still have yet to do the JMT/Central
California section.

I left Kennedy Meadows June 10 and finished at Echo Pass July 18. There was
a lot of snow and it was slow going (we did 10-15 miles per day), but we
went straight through and took a lot of zeroes along the way (3 in Bishop, 4
in Mammoth, plus 3 days to finish the JMT to Yosemite Valley).

It's been several weeks since I was through, so there is undoubtedly less
snow now than there was for me, but I will tell you what I experienced.

We had more or less solid snow from one day north of Kennedy Meadows until
Sonora Pass. It would get patchy and/or dry at lower elevations, and there
were several days when we walked entirely on snow. We even slept on snow one
night, for lack of a dry patch. This was exhausting and would have been
frustrating if we didn't keep a positive outlook and think of it as a fun
challenge.

Ice axes and spikes were absolutely necessary for us, as was GPS and good
map-and-compass skills. I really liked having gaiters to keep the icy snow
from scraping my legs when I postholed. The morning was usually firm and we
used spikes. By afternoon, the snow was slushy and we would posthole. We
tried to go up the passes in the firm morning snow and glissade down the
backside in the afternoon slush (not on the ice!!).

River crossings were big, but doable. They should be significantly mellower
now that so much snow has melted off. Some people ran into trouble crossing
at some of the official trail crossings, but if you aren't in too much of a
hurry and look upstream you should be able to find a safe spot. I am tiny
-only 5'0" and 120 pounds- and I was able to cross Return, Mono, Spiller,
Piute, Kerrick, and Falls creeks by myself without much trouble (I crossed
with a partner/group for some others). If I can do the crossings, so can
you. Just take the time to look upstream for a calm spot or a log bridge.

Plan for slow miles and bring plenty of food. We burned a lot of calories.
Some groups left Kennedy Meadows intending to go straight through to VVR,
but from what I saw, it seemed like most groups came out at Kearsarge Pass
and resupplied in Independence/Bishop because they ate their food faster
than they planned. We planned to do one pass a day, which was a realistic
pace for June. Again, you will probably be faster with less snow and milder
rivers, but that worked for us.

The bottom line is, the Sierras are gorgeous. Enjoy them. We saw a few
groups who weren't enjoying themselves and it seemed like they were pushing
themselves too hard. If you bring enough food and take your time, you will
probably have a lot more fun. Love it and take lots of pictures!

There's a guy who is planning to trail run a segment of the Colorado

My sweetie is up hiking that section right now, called earlier today
by cell from the slopes of Thielsen.  Heavy mosquitoes, and a decent
bit of snow causing some slow-down but not much.  Got a call again
tonight: the snow north of Thielsen was 'pretty gnarly' in her words
and maybe more than she wants to be doing, so she's thinking about
changing plans depending on conditions tomorrow.

If anyone knows about conditions in that area - towards Shelter Cover
- and also Mt Hood as she's considering jumping up to Olallie then
continuing northbound if at all possible - please chime in and I'll
relay the info by cell.  Technology... often bad, occasionally real
good... even though lots of folks would consider this 'cheating'.

PS every opinion is different: she's a section hiker, spent 5 days on
the snow a few years ago in the Sierra - so read it as you will.  Any
reports would be a great help.  Thanks!

Also, this from pcta.org:

8/9/2011 - Heads up to hikers - there is still considerable snow pack
around the back side of mt. Thielsen and diamond mountain. It was
extremely trick to stay on trail. Gps and yak track footgear would be
necessary. Advise all coming this way to take the oregon skyline trail
alternate routes by diamond lake and crescent lakes up to shelter
cove, for at least the next week or so. Reported 8/8/11.

For the same price (and quite a price it is....), you can go _even_
lighter-- 14.2 oz with bug protection-- using Mountain Laurel Designs
Cricket Tent with Cuben Fiber option.

Has anyone had any experience with the tarptent sublite? I have placed my order already, and they seem to be back ordered until late August. I am a little skeptical about their durability for a thru-hike. If anyone has, or knows someone who has used this tent, can you please tell me any interesting info that you may have.

I have a Sublite Sil.  Unfortunately I've only used it a few times, and
never in bad weather, so can't help you too much.  But having said that,
I've been happy with how it sets up, and there is plenty of room for me and
my gear.  As far as durability goes, I try to be careful about where I set
it up, and I use a partial ground cover under it for extra protection.
So far, with my limited use, I'm happy with it.

In our SAR circles, I came across some interesting comments about the effectiveness of using SPOTs, PLBs, and SAT devices, if anyone is interested:

(we still always carry a SAT phone and a Sheriff's 2-way radio)
