[pct-l] 6 month visa from UK

Hi,
Anyone here been through the process of applying for a 6 month US visa from the 
UK, for a thru hike? Looking on the internet, seems like Visa Pro will charge 
295 dollars plus a variable filing fee. That plus the cost of a return train 
ticket from the north of England to London, for two of us, equals "ouch lots of 
money".  Any useful tips on a cheaper way of doing it?
