Hi Two Legs, Thanks for the input. Parking my rig at Agnew might be an option for me to consider seriously -more convenient. It would work as long as the first Shuttle Bus could get me to the Crest Bus at McDonalds in time - by about 8:00AM. The bus going north stops there at 8:20.

Hi Mendorider, It is my understanding that you (i.e., anyone) can drive down to Devil's Postpile NP BEFORE the ranger kiosk at Minaret Point opens, in order words before 7 a.m. I have done this two or three times, left my car in the parking lot at Agnew Meadow, and hiked around in the area for a few days. I had a hiking permit of course. I learned from someone at the information center in Mammoth that traffic was permitted on that road after 7 pm and before 7 am. In between, it was necessary to use the shuttle bus, or have an approved exemption (such as handicapped plaque, reservations at Reds Meadows cabins, etc). This might not be convenient for you, but if it is, and you check it out and it applies to you, maybe it would help.
Happy Trails,
Two Legs

Hi Ron,
I have checked that out.? You can drive your rig down AS LONG AS A HORSE IS IN
THE TRAILER. On my way north I plan on stopping at Agnew Meadow and camp with my
horse at the corrals at Agnew. The next morning I will try to get written
permission from the Ranger there to be able to come down from Mammoth to get my
horse with my empty trailer. Given the circumstances, I'm pretty confident that
I will be able to get that permission.? Also, lacking that, I have equestrian
friends here in Agua Dulce who said that if you drive down early or late there
is no one to stop you. The road is not blocked. That is what they did two years
ago.
Best Regards.? I will always remember meeting you at the shelter.
