Many hikers hike to the valley in one day - a day hike doesn't require a 
permit.  By the time you get to Yosemite, the 27 mile (mostly downhill) hike 
isn't that bad.  Even I can do it - and I'm old and out of shape! (Of course I 
can barely walk for days afterward...)

If you want to hike to the Valley you will need to get a Yosemite Wilderness 
Permit, before, or while at TM.  Just go to the rangers station down the Rd from 
the campground and see if you can get one.  Shroomer
