Just wear insect repellent clothing like I did. I never had a tick on me and the 
insects did not bother me - over five months on the PCT.  Mosquitoes didn't land 
on my cloths and bite through - they just didn't land when they smelled the 
permethrin. Check out ExOfficio  Insect Shield and Buzz Off with permethrin. REI 
sells it or you can find it on the web. I wore the socks, pants, shirt and hat 
with cape to protect your neck. When the mosquitoes were really bad I also put 
insect repellent on the back of my hands,and on my forehead and cheeks.
