I use to carry wine with me on overnight trips -- I had some nalgene
bottles (not the official cantees) that I got from the storeroom at work
and used only for wine. worked great, especially with the cheap wine (like
Gallo) I drank in those days.
Then one 3 night trip I carried a bottle of champagne to celebrate my
birthday. I carried the empty out with me.

I still get people looking at me askance when I tell this story and asking "you carried the empties back out right?". The answer is of course "yes". Lots of what we learned in Scouts served us well and preceded LNT!
