Wasn't there also an alternate route out of Steven's Pass that went
by a hot spring? Could be a possibility for some under certain
conditions.
Also, if you are of the more adventurous sort (adventurous with
hitchhiking), you could attempt to hitchhike to Keogh Hot Spring when
you go for a resupply to Independence. Keogh is all built up like a
resort, but before you get to the resort, the hot spring is running
through the creek. It's a hot ditch. There are pools that you can
select based on temperature. Keogh is about 30 miles south of Bishop.
You'd definitely have to hitch.
And I'm probably wrong, but I thing there was an alternate route
north of Wrightwood that might have had a hot spring, or maybe just a
creek. Warner Springs Monty told me he likes this alternate.
