To clarify, the emergency sites are not located on the PCT, but on a trail

called Palm-to-Pines, which originates out of Palm Springs and ascends 

westward up San Jacinto, terminating at the Palm Springs Tramway area.

The Riverside Volunteer Search & Rescue group must be getting tired of searching

every year in the rugged mountains through which the PCT passes. They've 

installed

two emergency stations for lost hikers with solar powered beacons to light the 

locations after dark.

 

Four deaths noted in this article. Same area PCT hiker John Donovan died in 

2005.

 

The S&R people actually do a lot of work in that area. They have a website.
